There is a huge gap in Canada's emergency alert system that needs urgent attention!
At present, an Amber Alert is intended for situations involving an abducted child. However, vulnerable people who rely on caregiver support and cannot self-rescue can wander/elope and go missing without any indication of an abduction. Many cannot recognize danger or communicate their name, address or phone number.
Research on autistic individuals shows that approx. 49%have wandered (eloped)after the age of four. Of those who wander, 65% encounter traffic related dangers and 24% face risks around water. They are also significantly more likely to die by drowning than the general pediatric population. Under the current alert system, families in exactly these situations do not have access to a public emergency alert when every minute matters.
We are asking for the creation of an Indigo Alert for vulnerable missing persons-a narrowly defined alert category for those who rely on caregiver support, cannot self rescue, and are at an immediate risk of danger.
